Questions and Answers About Joining a Union How Our Dues Work For Us
Union Workplace:
- Your wages, benefits and working conditions are protected by a legal contract
- The contract guarantees equal pay for equal work.
- The union negotiates raises for everyone. The employees vote on the settlement. If you don’t think it is a fair settlement, you can vote it down.
- If you are unfairly disciplined, the union will defend you.
- If you do a good job and are in line for a promotion, you will get it.
- If you don’t like something at work, you can change it.
- Vacations, shifts, and other choices are based on seniority, not favoritism.
Non-Union Workplace:
- Management can change wages, benefits, or working conditions whenever they want.
- You can’t compare salaries because no one knows how much anyone else earns.
- If you want a raise you have to hope for it, or become the boss’s “favorite”.
- If you are disciplined for something you didn’t do, you’re on your own.
- Promotion can be handed out on any basis-friendship, loyalty, favoritism, etc.
- If you don’t like something at work, you suffer silently or you can quit.
- Vacations and shifts are scheduled for management convenience, not the employee’s.
Which one looks better to you?
